We “return again” to the deepest center of our Catholic identity, Jesus Christ, present in the Mass--and seek to now become more fully acquainted, socially and informally, with our parish family. Join, as one, with our parish family members to reflect together on the ever-ancient-ever-new Catholic spirituality of Holy Week!
Session 1, March 15: Palm Sunday Reflections
What sort of Kingship do I allow Jesus Christ to occupy in my life?
Against the backdrop of the suffering to come, in the Mass readings we focus on the ironic reaction of the “crowd,” which evokes our own lived response. Christ’s triumphal entrance into Jerusalem forces us to notice his entrance into our lives, creating a dramatic tension within our hearts, just as it did in Jerusalem two thousand years ago.
Session 2, March 22: Holy Thursday Reflections
What hopes, promises, and expectations are truly at the center of our hearts?
An extended reflection on the mystery of human pride, ego and betrayal-- and the sacrificial love, given by our Lord in the washing of the disciples’ feet, at the Last Supper, and in the Garden of Gethsemane. Above all it is a mystery of the human heart, which aligns our intellect, will and emotions.
Session 3, March 29: Good Friday Reflections
How can we make a more generous gift of ourselves to our families and our world?
A haunting and healing reflection on the counter-cultural nature of our Savior who somehow rules from the Cross, thereby conquering the forces of evil within and without. Today the assembly is invited to literally touch this cross. This is to re-orient us to God’s “cruciform” pattern of his unique calling and desire for each of us. To be configured to this Cross is to be conformed to His love, His justice, His peace.
Session 4, April 5: Easter Vigil Reflections
In light of the gift of Christ's love, what can we fear? Before such love, what possible reaction is there but increasing self-honesty and gratitude?
The Church gathers, lights a fire, and sings into the darkness, “This is the night when Jesus Christ
broke the chains of death and rose triumphant from the grave. What good would life have been to us,
had Christ not come as our Redeemer?” We listen to the ritualized “long story” of salvation history, retold annually to a forgetful people, of the Father’s abiding love for us, foreshadowed in the Hebrew scriptures, fulfilled in our hearing at the great Alleluia sung at this Mass.
